Mirror's Edge: Choosing The Right Edgework

A-1 Glass & Mirror can provide or fabricate many styles of edgework for mirrors and clear glass. Outside of a few specific applications, edgework is mostly an aesthetic decision, and as such is a deeply personal choice. The main consideration when selecting edgework for your glass or mirror comes down to a simple question: Will the edge of my glass be seen? If the edge will be seen, several options exist to select from. If the edge will not be seen, most people elect to utilize a “Shop Edge,” or less commonly a “Seamed Edge,” for example in tables, picture frames, or shelves where the glass fits into a recessed space or pocket. Whatever style is best for your piece, this simple guide can help inform your decision about the edgework of your mirror or clear glass.

Seamed Edge: An industry term, a seamed edge is completely unfinished. Custom fabricated mirrors are typically “broken” or cut to size, and the newly cut edge is known as a seam. Seamed edges can be sharp, and are appropriate only for applications where the edges of glass are not visible. While ¼” mirror and clear glass can be seamed, any glass thickness larger than ¼” requires factory edgework, as thicker glass will prominently display the “wavy” material imperfections inherent to all heavy glass.

Polish: A polished edge presents as a translucent, semi-reflective, greenish or bluish tint. A polished edge will feel very smooth, similar to the face of the glass. The faint greenish or blueish tint is the natural color of the glass when viewed in profile.

Grind: A ground edge presents as an opaque, matte, non-reflective, greenish or bluish tint. A ground edge will have a texture similar to fine sandpaper, and its appearance will contrast significantly with the smooth face of the glass. The faint greenish or blueish tint will be similar to a Polish Edge, although far less pronounced. Grind Edges are generally less noticeable and less “eye-catching” than Polish Edges.

Shop Edge: A “Shop Edge” is the most economical edgework option, and simply removes the sharp corners of the glass to prevent potential injury during transport or installation. A Shop Edge will appear matte (similar to a “ground” edge) and the edge will be rounded/semicircular (similar to a “Pencil” edge), although the appearance is slightly less elegant than the more finished options below. NOTE: All custom-fabricated mirrors at A-1 Glass come with a shop edge.

Flat Polish: A Flat Polish edge presents as a trapezoidal shape, similar to a flat-topped pyramid. Flat Polished edges will also have the same semi-reflective, greenish or blueish tint inherent to all polished edges. A Flat Polished edge is a good choice if the edge of your glass will be exposed to view.

Flat Grind: A Flat Grind edge presents as the same trapezoidal shape as the Flat Polish edge, however with a matte and opaque appearance, and texture similar to that of sandpaper. The greenish or bluish tint will be more faint and less noticeable compared to a Flat Polish edge. A Flat Grind edge is a good choice if the edge of your glass will be exposed to view.

Pencil Polish: A Pencil Polish edge presents as a rounded/semi-circular shape, with the same semi-reflective, greenish or blueish tint inherent to all polished edges. Pencil Polish edges will have no angles, and are oftentimes seen as a more “contemporary” appearance than Flat Edges. A Pencil Polish edge is a good choice if the edge of your glass will be exposed to view.

Pencil Grind: A Pencil Grind edge presents as a rounded/semi-circular shape, with the same opaque, matte, textured appearance inherent to all Grind Edges. Pencil Grind edges will have no angles, and are oftentimes seen as a more “contemporary” appearance than Flat Grind Edges. A Pencil Grind edge is a good choice if the edge of your glass will be exposed to view.

Arris: The edge formed by the meeting of two curved or flat surfaces. In common language, the Arris is the edge of a piece of glass. Each of the edgework options presented here refer to various designs and finishes of that edge, or more technically, arris.

Bevel: A slope on the face of a piece of glass, which leads into the edge. Bevels can be various sizes and designs. Most commonly seen on mirrors, typical bevel dimensions are ½”, 1” or 2”. The terms Arris and Bevel are often confused, however a bevel differs from an arris in that an arris is on the edge of glass, while a bevel is on the face of glass.

This means that sunshades, blinds, or awnings are simply not enough to prevent fading over time, as ultraviolet (UV) light rays “bounce” off objects such as streets, trees and cars at low angles to enter a building and damage color fidelity over time. IR light on overcast or cloudy days will also fade materials, so damage to colors is not only confined to sunny summer days or South-facing windows. Different materials exhibit fading at different rates, with natural fibers like wool fading faster than synthetic fibers; practically, this means that items such as antiques and rugs tend to fade faster than modern vinyl window frames. Certain colors are also more susceptible to rapid fading, with shades of red and bright fluorescent dyes exhibiting the most rapid color deterioration. Additionally, exposure to UV light rays is known to damage the skin at the cellular level, so the mitigation of radiation transmission through window glass is an important long-term consideration for both homes and businesses.

Light fades colors by damaging the chromophores of materials, the part of molecules that are responsible for color. When light rays hit a material, specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by specific species of chromophores, and the remaining unabsorbed light is reflected. For example, the chromophore in plants called chlorophyll that absorbs reds and blues does not absorb most green wavelengths of light, so those green rays are reflected off leaves or grass and then seen by the human eye. Fading happens when chromophores are damaged at the atomic level, making them less able to absorb their specific frequencies of light. So, faded colors don’t “go” anywhere, the chromophores responsible for re-emitting them to our eyes simply don’t emit photons in that frequency with the same quantity or intensity as non-faded colors.

Fading occurs both in short exposures to intense light, as well as long exposures to weaker light, and is often measured in Hunter Units. A Hunter Unit is the measure of the smallest discernable difference to the human eye between two shades of the same color. Developed during the 1950’s and 1960’s, the Hunter Scale is a method of quantizing and communicating color fading visible to humans. A combination of three values, the Hunter Scale combines measurements of light vs dark, red vs green, and blue vs yellow, (or the L-, A- and B-scales respectively). An intuitive measurement, Hunter Units can be used by the discerning homeowner or contractor to identify, anticipate, and mitigate indoor color fading. Knowledge of these methods can provide context to the purchase of specialty radiation-reducing glass, and leveraging the mitigation of color fading is often used to provide a “hidden value” to the sale of a home or business.

Certain steps can be taken to diminish the rate of color fading, such as placing a prized piece of artwork outside of direct sunlight; however, fading can only be minimized, and never totally prevented. While windows are a prized way of creating a well-lit and inviting interior, various types of glass exhibit different light-absorbing and light-reflecting properties. All About Mirrors

Although mirrors made from bronze, obsidian, and polished stone have existed for thousands of years, modern mirror glass became commonplace during the Industrial Revolution, when companies such as the still-operating Saint-Gobain utilized technological advances to mass produce mirrors made of glass. Today, mirrors have become so commonplace that the public expects large and numerous mirrors in almost every public space. Used prominently in restrooms, clothing stores and gyms, mirrors can provide comfort before a nerve-wracking job interview, spaciousness to a confined office, or safety in a home gym or yoga studio. While mirror glass purchasing, installation, and maintenance may appear uncomplicated, a wise general contractor or homeowner will avail himself or herself with the full breadth of mirror glass considerations.

Weight and Thickness

Mirrors come in a large variety of sizes, shapes, and thicknesses. From mass produced automobile mirrors, to curved mirrors used to prevent shoplifting or improve driver safety, to custom artwork in tiled bathrooms, mirror glass is prized for its versatility. Mirrors come in a large variety of compositions and thicknesses, however most mirrors come in a standard thickness of ¼”. Quarter-inch mirrors are a good compromise between strength, weight, and durability, as most ¼” mirrors also fit into the recesses of frames and cabinets, making mirror thicknesses other than ¼” uncommon. Because most mirrors are mounted vertically on walls, the weight of a mirror must be heavily considered. Large panels of mirrors are often requested for both public and private gyms and fitness studios, however one should expect a standard 8’ x 5’ mirror panel to weigh well more than 100 pounds. As mirrors increase in weight in direct proportion to their square footage and thickness, a wall-to-wall mirror in a basement home gym may look great, but just how in the world are you going to move it?

Shape

Rectangular mirrors are most commonly encountered, especially in restrooms and fitness settings. However, mirrors can be cut to almost any shape imaginable. Realize that although a sheet of mirror glass can be cut into that custom eleven-point star shape for the rotary club’s meeting room, the price of a custom mirror increases in proportion to the amount of labor and complexity of its fabrication. Generally, circular mirrors, mirrors with cutouts for electrical sockets, asymmetrical or beveled mirrors, and mirrors with custom and intricate designs cost much more than standard square or rectangular mirrors.

Edgework

In general, mirrors can receive the same types of edgework as clear glass. The edges of mirrors can be polished or grinded, flat or rounded, or even specially shaped, and the faces of mirrors can be beveled for a more complex design. Beveled mirrors and those with detailed ornamental designs can be a great addition to your home or office space, however the directions of light sources, sight lines, and glare must all be deeply considered before purchase. While mirrors can be very elaborate or “busy” with design details, customers generally elect to install mirrors that exhibit elegant simplicity.

Mounting Techniques

Every mirror requires two things to be mounted: 1) something to rest on, and 2) something to adhere to the surface behind it. Mirrors can be mounted in frames made of wood or other materials, although the most common method of mounting mirrors in bathrooms and gyms is directly to the wall. To accomplish wall mounting, most homeowners choose to rest a mirror on a type of metal mounting hardware called a “J-channel” or other more decorative bracket. J-channels can be used solely at the bottom of a mirror, or can be installed top-and-bottom for a decorative touch. To adhere a mirror to the wall behind it, a special adhesive known as “mirror mastic” must be used. Out-of-Squares

Most walls are not perfectly straight; the industry term for this is “out-of-square.” Although the wall of a master bathroom may appear to be straight to the naked eye, the addition of a perfectly rectangular vanity mirror may expose a wavy wall or out-of-square backsplash. For this reason, most homeowners choose professional glass companies to mount their mirrors, as specialized tools such as laser levels are standard issue to experienced glazing companies. While the cost of professional mounting may seem prohibitive at first, the transport and mounting of a 100 lb vanity mirror can prove very problematic to inexperienced hands. Design choices such as bevels, specialty shapes, and edgework should be carefully weighed against the overall design intent of the space, as well as the adjacent hardware, fixtures, and artwork. For example, a rounded mirror with a wide bevel and highly polished edgework may distract the eye in a minimalist-style home; conversely, a standard rectangular mirror with grinded or matte edgework may interrupt the flow of an artfully-decorated wall. Sound Attentuation Explained

Glass is often used in window and door systems to reduce noise; the industry term for this is “sound attenuation,” or sound reduction. While all materials attenuate sound over distance, some materials such as wood and concrete reduce sound better than other materials such as air or water. Glass is often utilized in environments that require sound attenuation, but where unobstructed sightlines are needed, such as recording studios. Sound attenuation has taken an increased importance in recent years, as the likelihood of identity theft may lie in a single eavesdropped phone conversation or overheard credit card number.

Sound waves are disturbances of the particles in a medium, producing a pattern of pressure waves which our ears detect as noises. Sound waves are longitudinal, meaning that the particles in the medium all move in the same direction as the waves. Conversely, visible light creates transverse waves, meaning the particles of the medium vibrate at right angles perpendicular to the wave direction, such as the in ripples on the surface of water. While sound waves have several characteristics such as wavelength, velocity, and time, a sound wave’s frequency is most relevant for sound attenuation purposes, and is measured in Hertz (abbreviated Hz.)

A material’s Sound Transmission Class, or STC rating, is a measure of the material’s efficiency at reducing the transmission of sound waves from one side of the material to the other. While all materials attenuate particular frequencies of sound differently, the STC scale is a standardized and logarithmic measure meant for practical application. Knowing that some materials are more effective at reducing certain frequencies, the public is better able to plan upcoming construction or renovation projects; this fact is particularly important as one must consider not only the amount of sound a room will experience, but also the frequency of that sound. In practical terms, one may choose to install a different material to reduce a Great Dane’s barking vs. a Chihuaha’s.

Sound attenuating materials have received more widespread use in recent years, as more homeowners and businesses emphasize quiet –and information security– at their home or business. Additionally, two leaves of different thicknesses or compositions offer improved STC ratings vs two leaves of the same thickness. When glass window or door systems are used to reduce sound transmission, double-paned (insulated glass units) and laminated glass are often utilized. Oftentimes, a combination of thick glass, layers of laminate, and air pockets are utilized to create window systems with improved STC ratings. For example, an STC rated window at a downtown office’s conference room may use a 1” thick insulated glass unit, comprised of one layer of 3/16” glass, a 9/16” air spacer, and one layer of ¼” of laminated glass to create a private and secure setting.

Architectural aluminum provides a contemporary aesthetic to any building, and when paired with glass, aluminum fenestration systems create a sleek and classy appearance in any commercial space. Aluminum partitions seamlessly lend durability, attractive appearance, and economical pricepoint to commercial windows and entrances. While aluminum partitions are commonly used at the storefronts of many businesses, a variety of aluminum and glass systems exist for many different applications, both interior and exterior. Commercial customers choose aluminum fenestration systems for both appearance and performance; from the elegant facade of a skyscraper’s glazed Curtain Wall, to sleek-looking interior windows at a medical imaging clinic, to the constantly-used entrance door at a local fast food restaurant, commercial aluminum systems are a wise choice for architects and general contractors alike.

One does not need to travel very far to see a commercial aluminum system; used at most public-facing entrances to businesses, several types of aluminum partition systems are commonly encountered, classified by their method of fabrication and performance requirements:

Storefront - The most common type of aluminum partitions are called Storefront, highly customizable systems manufactured by a handful of international mega-corporations. Storefront aluminum openings are largely uncomplicated to build, and consist of a head and sill, with jambs or mullions alongside vertical and horizontal intermediates. Rubber gasketing is used to lock glass panels in place, and attractive glazing stops hide exposed components from view. Manufactured in a variety of sizes for different requirements, Storefront systems are non-structural, and come in common colors such as Black, Bronze, and Clear anodized, as well as custom fluropon paints. Storefront aluminum “butts” up against the wall, making installation easy – even at historical buildings with many different wall thicknesses. While sometimes encountered inside buildings, Storefront aluminum is usually seen at the exterior of a building, where a technology known as “thermal-breaking” reduces energy lost to the cold, or hot, outside environment. Water diverters, “weep” holes and end dams make Storefront systems a good choice in areas of heavy rainfall such as the Portland Metro.

Curtain Wall - The structurally-supporting and load-bearing variant of storefront, Curtain Wall is typically utilized where exterior windows are taller than 10 feet vertically, or where windload exceeds the capability of Storefront, e.g. at the Oregon Coast. Curtain Wall is generally larger in size and thickness than Storefront, and can be loaded with steel to support even more weight. Curtain Wall is also installed differently, typically utilizing a pressure-plate system that is stacked in place. Less commonly encountered than Storefront, Curtain Wall is the heavy-duty commercial aluminum option for large facilities such as parking garages and office towers. Curtain Wall differs from Window Wall primarily in the method of distributing the system’s weight: Curtain Wall is structurally independent, earning its name from the way in which it “hangs” on the outside a building, like a curtain.

Window Wall - Converse to Curtain Wall, Window Wall systems are typically pre-manufactured. Window Walls do not span between floors of a building, as Curtain Wall does; instead Window Wall panels sit between floor slabs, are anchored at the head and sill, and are typically installed through the interior of a building, or with large cranes or swing stages. Window Walls are most commonly used at the building envelope of massive high-rise buildings.

Interior Aluminum Partitions - While many municipal buildings such as elementary schools and prisons elect to utilize bulky and unattractive hollow metal steel (HM) interior doors and frames, interior aluminum partitions are often viewed as a more contemporary and aesthetically pleasing option. Commercial interior aluminum systems, similar to HM frames, fully “wrap” the drywall, and internal components are hidden from view by removable trim or “beauty plates.” Interior aluminum systems are typically more expensive than their storefront counterparts, however they are often specified in commercial construction tenant improvements and new construction to lend a modern and streamlined feel to an office or business. Additionally, some applications prevent use of steel doorframes and windows, such as a hospital’s MRI room where adjacent materials cannot be magnetized. When appearances are compared, interior aluminum systems often supersede interior storefront for their slim appearance and lack of raised glazing stops.

All-Glass Partitions - Frameless, or “all-glass” partitions are often utilized to divide offices and create shop fronts in malls. Frameless glass partitions typically use ½” ⅝” or ¾” glass, similar to shower doors. The extra thickness imparts added strength to the glass, and commercial customers prize all-glass partitions for their clean and elegant appearance, with none of the prominent aluminum framing inherent to storefront and interior aluminum.

Automatic Entrances - Automatic aluminum/glass entrances are encountered at almost every grocery store and market. Controlled by a complicated suite of electronic components, powered auto doors can part equally in the center, fold, or even telescope during use. Many revolving doors such as those seen at airports and hotels are also made of aluminum and glass. Powered doors are a wise choice when guests and patrons are usually pushing shopping carts or carrying luggage, and hands-free operation is required.

Specialty Aluminum Systems - A large variety of specialty commercial aluminum partition systems exist to accommodate specific needs. Commercial aluminum systems can be used in conjunction with operable windows to help teachers or office workers deal with changing temperatures. ADA - The Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990, and requires that public spaces accommodate persons with disabilities. Commercial construction requires certain ADA accommodations be made in doors and door hardware. The most common accommodation is a 10” bottom rail in commercial doors, meant to limit the damage to the door glass by persons using wheelchairs.

Annealed - The process by which glass is created, consisting of high heat and precisely timed cooling. “Normal” or “standard” glass is called annealed glass in the industry. Annealed glass will fragment into large uneven shards if broken.

Anodize - Most commonly used in conjunction with aluminum, anodization is a protective layer of oxide which prevents corrosion of the underlying metal. Applied through an electrolytic process, metal forms the negative (or anodic) electrode of an electrolytic cell. Anodization is typically done by dipping large sticks of metal into a tank of liquid chemicals for a preset amount of time.

Arris - Defined as the edge formed by the meeting of two curved or flat surfaces, an arris is the shape at the edge of a piece of glass. An industry term, arris is often confused with the more common term “bevel,” although the two have very different meanings. Whereas an arris is on the edge of a piece of glass, a bevel is on the face of glass.

Astragal - A convex, or semi-circular, molding or strip of material that separates two flat sections. Commonly seen on columns astragals are also applied to the minimize the gap between two leaves of a pair of doors or windows.

Bead - When silicon or other sealant is applied in a line to join two pieces of material for weatherproofing or other reasons, it is known as a bead.

Bevel - A slope on the face of a piece of glass, which leads into the edge. Bevels can be various sizes and designs. Most commonly seen on mirrors, typical bevel dimensions are ½”, 1” or 2”. Differs from an arris in that an arris is on the edge of glass, while a bevel is on the face of glass.

Borrowed Lite - An industry term for a window from one room looking into another. The light is “borrowed” from the adjoining room.

Building Envelope - The entirety of the materials used to separate the interior of a building from its exterior. Consisting of walls, windows, doors, concrete, drywall, framing, cladding, and moisture barriers, the building envelope greatly influences the energy efficiency, or R-value,

of a building.

Butt-Glazed - A method of glazing. Butt-Glazing is the industry term for two pieces of glass that directly touch, or “butt up” against each other. Common in interior applications, butt glazing creates unobstructed sightlines that are free of the intermediate vertical aluminum or steel pieces that usually separates glass panes.

Cladding - Any metal, wood, vinyl, or other material applied to the outside surface of a building for performance or decorative purposes.

Clerestory - Pronounced “clear-story,” clerestories are windows which are high up on walls, close to the ceiling. While transoms are directly above doors, clerestories are separated from the door by a section of wall.

Closer - A piece of hardware situated at the top or bottom of a door or door frame which automatically closes the door at a prescribed rate. Typically used in conjunction with a holder in commercial doors.

Division 08 - The portion of commercial construction devoted to openings and fenestration. Construction is divided into many divisions, beginning with ground leveling and other civil work, and ending with small ornamental touches such as paint and exit signs. Division 08 typically takes place after about ½ to 2/3rds of construction has taken place.

EPD - Environmental Product Declarations are documents offered by companies which detail their environmental impact and steps taken to reduce that impact.

Emissivity - The measure of the ratio of radiation emitted by an object when compared to a “blackbody” from physics academia. The scale is between 0 (for a perfectly reflector) to 1 (for a perfect emitter). Low-Emissivity glass (or Low-E for short) is a type of glass to which a very thin coat of silver has been applied, reducing the energy lost during winter by nearly half.

Fenestration - The technical term for anything related to openings.

Film - Window film may be one of a variety of materials that are surface-applied to glass. Architecturally, window film is typically used to create privacy or reduce radiation transmission. For example, a hotel owner may elect to apply a translucent film to the windows of a fitness studio in order to prevent unwanted stares, while simultaneously allowing light into a space.

Fire-Rated Glass - Glass systems can be used in place of sprinkler systems to reduce or prevent the spread of fire and heat. Usually very expensive, many types of fire rated (or F/R) glass exist, and are primarily used in commercial construction where the extension of sprinkler systems is impractical or impossible.

Glass Stops - The thin strips of wood, vinyl, or metal which hold glass in the window or door. While myriad styles exist, vinyl and aluminum stops are most common. Wood glass stops can be problematic, especially in older houses, as wood is fragile and easily damaged during routine replacement.

Grid - A decorative element used to create a symmetrical appearance in windows and doors. Usually attached to the surface of the glass, (or inside the air gap for insulated glass units), grids are meant to mimic older colonial style architecture. While contemporary grids are purely decorative and may come in a large variety of styles, grids used in older homes were often structural mullions.

Hardware - All handles, faucets, towel bars, locks, thresholds and other metal devices with specialized purposes are known as hardware, or HW for short. Special care must be taken to ensure the finish, or color, of hardware matches in a room.

Holder or Hold-Open - A piece of hardware meant to allow a door to remain open. Typically used in conjunction with a closer for commercial doors.

Insulated Glass (IG or IGU) - Insulated, or “double-pane” glass is a sealed and airtight unit comprised of two pieces of glass separated by an air space, commonly filled with an Argon/Oxygen mixture. IG units feature a wide variety of glass types, thicknesses, and air spaces, and are a cost-effective way to reduce energy usage in Summer and Winter.

Knee Wall - Also called a “pony wall,” a knee wall is a wall that begins at the floor and extends only part way to the ceiling. Commonly used to separate spaces in home and office settings, knee walls are often utilized to support window glass when privacy is desired.

Laminated Glass - Glass may be laminated with various types of laminate materials in order to confer special properties to the glass, such as ballistic or wind-borne debris resistance. Laminated glass is most commonly seen in commercial use to prevent broken glass from falling out of an opening.

LEED - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is a set of criteria widely adopted in commercial construction. Various LEED criteria are often required, and may mandate use of recycled content, use of local manufacturers, use of environmentally friendly sealants, use of inert materials, and others.

Lite - The industry term for a window, either interior or exterior.

Louver - A set of angled flat strips in a door or wall, intended to allow light and air to enter while simultaneously maximizing privacy and minimizing solar radiation.

Low-E - A type of glass to which a very thin layer of silver has been applied to reduce the emissivity of the glass, thereby reducing the energy lost to radiation. See “Emissivity.”

Low-Iron Glass - Iron is commonly added to glass to reduce the transmittance of ultra-violet (UV) radiation. Low-iron glass offers a more “clear” appearance with minimum greenish or bluish tint, however it is primarily used in interior applications due to its minimal effect on solar radiation. Low-iron glass is almost always seen in displays, and is not a functional architectural product.

Mastic - Mirror mastic is a special glue used to attach mirror glass to a surface. If mirror mastic specifically is not used, conventional adhesives or glue will de-silver the mirror over time, creating the familiar blotchy pattern on older mirrors that is reminiscent of partially erased pencil.

Monolithic Glass - A glass unit comprised of one single piece of glass. Used to differentiate single-pane glass from double-pane insulated glass units.

Mullion - A vertical or horizontal bar between the panes of glass on a window. Mullions are structural components and support some of the weight of glass. Mullions differ from muntins; mullions provide structural support, while muntins are purely decorative and provide no support.

Muntin - A vertical or horizontal bar applied between the panes of glass on a window. Muntins are decorative components which do not support any weight of glass. Muntins differ from mullions; while muntins are purely decorative and provide no support, mullions provide structural support.

Opening - The technical term for the place a window or door will eventually be installed. Prior to installation, a precisely measured hole or “opening” exists in the building’s drywall, framing and exterior finish.

Panic Device - A panic device/bar/hardware is the push bar which allows easy opening of a door; most commonly encountered at commercial buildings such as gyms, stores and malls.

R-Value - Defined as the temperature difference between between two surfaces of the same material (for example the warm interior and cold exterior surfaces of a wall or piece of glass), the amount of energy loss is inversely proportionate to the R-Value, and is extremely important when considering insulation and building envelope. E.G. a wall with R-45 confers far less energy loss than a wall rated R-6.

Safety Backing - A film applied to the rear surface of mirrors. Usually utilized in gyms, safety backing keeps mirror glass adhered to the wall, even if broken by an errant weight or barbell.

Safety Glass - While the meaning of the term “safety glass” will vary depending on context, it usually refers to tempered or heat-strengthened glass.

Sash Balance - Mechanisms installed on both sides of single- or double-hung windows, allowing for smooth opening and closing.

Sidelite - A window to the side and directly adjacent to a door. Commonly seen at the entrances to commercial and residential buildings.

Spandrel Glass - Glass which is painted on the back side (usually white) with an opaque solution. Spandrel glass can be used to create a “whiteboard” type surface on which to write, or most commonly, on large commercial buildings to hide mechanical equipment, concrete, wiring, or other features found between floors.

Stile - The vertical metal, wood, or plastic sides of a door which lie at either side of a door’s glass. Doors are typically Narrow Stile (NS), Medium Stile (MS), or Wide Stile (WS). Wide Stile doors are typically utilized in commercial applications with heavy usage, such as a grocery store entrance. Narrow Stile doors appear more contemporary and elegant, and are used when aesthetics are emphasized more than performance in a building’s design, for example at the interior door of the company president’s office.

Sweep - A plastic or rubber piece attached to the bottom of a shower door which prevents water from dripping and escaping to the outside of the shower enclosure. Sweeps are sometimes utilized in commercial doors, especially in regions where inclement weather is common.

Temper - A specialized process by which glass is heated and rapidly cooled in order to make it stronger, and minimize potential injury if broken. Tempered glass will “explode” into “a million tiny pieces” when broken, and is commonly used in both commercial building and automobiles, as well as occasional residential applications such as in doors.

Transom - A window which is directly above a door.

Vision Glass - Another term for the standard clear glass found in most windows and doors, vision glass is also sometimes called “float glass.”

Safety and Glass: Materials Matter

Tempered Glass - The most common type of safety glass is tempered glass. Tempered glass is created using high heat and rapid cooling, resulting in a stronger glass that will “explode” into “a million tiny pebble-sized pieces” when broken. Tempered glass must be used in certain applications such as in car windows, and in and adjacent to doors.

Laminated/Filmed Glass – Many different laminate and film products exist to improve the safety profile of glass. One or more layers of laminating material is often used on glass when forceful impacts such as birds, windborne-debris, or bullets are anticipated. Window film products also come in many different forms, with the most common being the safety film used on the backs of mirrors in gyms (used so that the mirror glass will stay “stuck” to the wall if broken by an errant weight or barbell).

Fire-Rated Glass – A variety of smoke- and fire-rated glass may be installed where protection from heat and flames is required. Fire-Rated glass is an expensive specialty product, and is generally only used in commercial buildings, for example at a factory’s back office that is out of reach of the sprinkler system.

Wire-Mesh Glass – While commonly used in the mid to late 20 ^th century, wire-mesh glass is rarely seen today. More resistant to damage than standard vision glass, the crossed mesh of wires inside wire-mesh glass improves the ability of the glass to stay in the opening, even if broken. Wire-mesh glass was commonly used when a barrier to the outside was still needed, even after the glass was broken E.G. exterior hotel doors in high-crime/homeless areas. Wire-mesh glass is generally not used today.

Windborne-Debris Impact Resistance – Glass specifically manufactured to resist impacts from windborne, or windblown, debris is commonly seen today. The most prevalent use is in hurricane zones such as Florida, or in areas that experience frequent high winds or tornados such as the eastern Oregon high desert. Windborne-debris resistant glass is typically manufactured using a combination of thick tempered glass, layers of laminate, and air pockets. Many municipal buildings utilize windborne-debris impact resistant glass, as critical services such as fire stations cannot simply shut down their operations, even during windstorms or hurricanes.

Ballistic Glass – Unfortunately, recent years have seen a drastic increase in demand for bullet-resistant glass due to public familiarity with gun crimes. Oftentimes used in high profile government offices such as military recruiting stations and crime-ridden areas such as inner-city convenience stores, recent years have seen many schools and manufacturing facilities explore ballistic glass systems. Ballistic glass is extremely expensive, and though bullet resistant, no glass is bullet proof; all types of bullet-resistant glass carry different protection ratings. Customers would be wise to thoroughly research ballistic glass before making a purchase: each type or “class” of ballistic glass only resists extremely specific types and quantities of impacts. So just because the glass at your convenience store may resist one 9mm bullet impact, it may not resist more than one 9mm impact.

Specialty Glass – Several varieties of specialty safety glass are also manufactured for highly specific purposes. For example, a clean room may install glass that is resistant to lasers, or a hospital may require X-Ray rated glass. These specialty glass types are rarely encountered outside of municipal, military, and industrial applications.

Safety-tempered glass is the most common type of safety glass, and among other guidelines, is required by building code when glass is:

- In any swinging or sliding door.

- Within 24” horizontally from a door when the bottom of the glass is less than 60” above the floor.

- Within 36” of a walking surface when the glass is over 9 square feet, the bottom is less than 18” from the floor, and the top is greater than 36” from the floor.

- In any railing.

- At any areas containing swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, showers, and other wet areas when the glass is less than 60” from the walking surface.

- Adjacent to ramps and stairways.

- In other areas designated “hazardous locations” by local or international building codes.

Safety glass is used in a variety of applications such as commercial, residential, and municipal buildings. Safety glass is typically not used in residential homes, except where required in doors, showers, and occasionally patio tables. However, most businesses and commercial buildings rely on safety glass to protect employees and the public from hazards. While building code requires safety glass in certain applications and areas, many owners also elect to install safety glass anywhere that safety is paramount. Common applications for safety glass may be windows high above a manufacturing floor, in the exterior windows of a school in a tornado alley, at the service window of a police station, or in an elderly care home or veterinary clinic. Careful consultation with local laws and building codes is crucial to ensure that one utilizes the correct type of glass for the job. In general, the use of safety glass is encouraged not only when mandated, but also when a specific situation is anticipated, such as where broken glass may injure disabled persons, or animals.

Many types of safety glass exist, so it is very important to “do your homework” to ensure that you are complying with all local laws and building codes. Additionally, one must balance cost with ethical considerations; many people elect to use safety glass where it is not required, but potential injuries to employees, customers, schoolchildren, or pets simply cannot be tolerated. Safety glass is also commonly used in specialty commercial applications to protect lives and valuable assets, such as protecting computer servers from fire. Glass Thickness Guide

Glass is manufactured in a wide range of thicknesses for various applications. In addition to the type of glass, the edgework of the glass, and the style of design, careful consideration must be given to the thickness of glass. While local building codes must always be consulted, several options exist depending on the glass’s application and use. Armed with the knowledge below, a savvy customer will be better prepared to navigate the choices surrounding glass thickness.

Single Lite - The industry term for what is commonly known as a “single pane” piece of glass, single lite glass is utilized for most interior applications (such as shelves, cabinets, mirrors, and tabletops) as well as in the exteriors of older buildings. Single lite glass does not carry the enhanced insulating or “energy saving” properties (or R-Value) of Insulated Glass, and is therefore discouraged for new construction and contemporary remodels.

Insulated Glass - Often called “double pane” glass, insulated glass (IG) units consist of two pieces of single lite glass separated by an aluminum spacer of various thicknesses, and joined together at the glass factory. IG units provide greatly enhanced R-Values, and are a savvy choice to reduce expensive long-term heating or cooling costs for the home or business. Beware of contractors who say they can build IG units themselves: ONLY insulated glass units made in a factory carry a warranty against internal fogging or moisture build-up due to failure. IGs typically carry a 10-year warranty from the manufacturer. Due to this warranty, IG replacement will always replace both “panes” of glass, even if only one is damaged.

1/8 Inch Glass - Most commonly used in picture frames and other small display items, 1/8” glass is visibly very thin. Because 1/8” glass is relatively fragile, it is not utilized in modern commercial or residential exterior construction, as even minor impacts such as those from small birds are likely to cause damage.

¼ Inch Glass - Typically utilized in garage door windows and on top of tables, ¼” glass provides an attractive confluence of strength and economical price point. Much less heavy and expensive than thicker glass, ¼” glass still offers the strength needed to set down a metal cup on a coffee table without worrying. Mirrors are typically ¼” thick.

3/8 Inch Glass - Shower doors and exterior furniture often utilize 3/8” glass due to its enhanced strength. While significantly more expensive and heavier than standard 1/4” glass, homeowners often use 3/8” glass in applications such as patio tables, where dangers such as falling acorns or a child’s or dog’s toy may impact it.

½ Inch Glass - Commonly used in interior applications such as shower doors, ½” glass is HEAVY. It is also significantly stronger than thinner glass, and for that reason may also be used for specialty displays (such as a glass cabinet, or a shelf that holds heavy statues or decorations). While the strength of ½” glass may be attractive, one must also balance the price and ease of relocation (it is heavy) when selecting interior glass.

¾ Inch Glass and Above - Sometimes utilized in shower doors, ¾”, 5/8” and 1” glass is uncommon due to its weight and expense. ¾” glass and above is mostly seen in shower doors. Glass thicknesses of 1” or greater are almost never utilized outside of specialty commercial applications, such as airports.

Laminated Glass - Any thickness of glass may be filmed or laminated for increased strength, durability, or safety. Laminated or filmed glass is a specialty product, and is most often selected when certain specialty criteria are specified, such as for protection from windborne debris inside hurricane or tornado zones. Laminated glass may also hold special properties such as reducing the sun’s radiation, or providing privacy for a gym or office; however, laminated glass often costs significantly more than non-laminated glass, due to the greater manpower used in its creation.

Glass thicknesses measured in millimeters (mm) may be encountered. While construction in the United States typically utilizes the American System of measuring (seen above in fractions of an inch), most locales outside of the U.S. use the Metric System (based on the millimeter). If you do happen to encounter a glass thickness shown in millimeters, an easy conversion formula can be used to convert from millimeters to inches: Divide the millimeter number by 25.4. E.G. 6mm divided by 25.4 = 0.23622 inches, or 1/4” when rounded.

Tempered vs Annealed Glass

All glass is created using a combination of Silica from sand (SiO2, or fused quartz), Soda ash (Na2CO3, or sodium carbonate), and Limestone (CaCO3, calcium carbonate) or Dolomite (MgCO3). Other materials are sometimes added to create special types of glass, such as lead, iron, or boric oxide. These materials are fused together at high temperatures, creating the rigid structure of glass that we use today. While all glass shares properties such as hardness and transparency, different types of glass exist for use in different applications.

Annealed Glass - Annealed glass (sometimes called “float glass”) is what most of us think of as “normal” or “standard” glass; created through the heating process described above, annealed glass is then cooled at a specific rate and temperature. Annealed glass will break into large uneven shards when broken, and does not have the increased strength that tempered glass does. Annealed glass is typically the most economical option, and is most commonly used where potential breakage does not create a safety hazard.

Heat-Strengthened Glass - Featuring a surface compression of 3500 psi to 7500 psi, heat-strengthened glass is approximately twice as strong as annealed glass. When broken, heat-strengthened glass will break into a pattern similar to annealed glass, forming large and potentially dangerous shards. Heat-strengthened glass represents an intermediate between annealed and tempered glass, useful in situations requiring increased strength, yet not used in potentially dangerous applications. Tempered glass has become very affordable due to technological advances, and for that reason heat-strengthened glass is no longer commonly used.

Tempered Glass - Safety-tempered glass is created in a similar process to annealed and heat-strengthened glass, yet tempered glass is both heated to a higher temperature and cooled more rapidly. This process creates the glass that we are used to seeing in our car windows, where breakage fragments the glass into “a million tiny pieces.” Tempered glass is commonly used for commercial applications where unsafe situations may be created if the glass were to break (for example above doorways or near stairs). In fact, United States Uniform Building Code requires that tempered glass be used in some cases, such as in doors, or directly adjacent to them. While tempered glass is about 4-5 times more resistant to breakage than standard annealed glass, it is slightly more fragile at the edges. Tempered glass is also typically slightly more expensive, owing to the increased labor and energy used to heat it to a higher temperature. PLEASE NOTE: Because tempered glass will completely shatter, or “explode,” when broken, it cannot be cut down after it is cooled, meaning that measurements provided to the glass factory will have to be exact, or the glass piece will have to be remade entirely. TEMPERED GLASS CAN NEVER BE CUT.

What will I use this glass for?
If this glass breaks, would large and sharp shards create the chance to injure someone, or their pet?
Will I need to cut or sand this glass in the future?
Does Building Code (UBC) require a certain type of glass?
